researching autism on the internet..?

0000 autism internet

When I first started “researching” about autism on the internet, I was simply overwhelmed by all that was out there. I also actively searched out some sort of ‘community’ – reading what other parents had to say certainly should be valuable and, possibly, comforting? But I quickly realized not all what people put online under the tag ‘autism’ is really valid information and advice. A LOT are opinion pieces based on experiences, impressions and misinformation – unfortunately sold as information and advice. And yes, people sure are selling a lot of stuff online too…
I cannot tell people what to read, what to believe or what to buy. I am still trying to find that out for myself! But I have one advice. Be critical and selective. Question. Compare.
Do not just believe everything you read on the internet. It’s that simple really.

mommy war zones

The internet is a great source of information, and as a new mother I was glad to have somewhere to turn to the different aspects of parenthood. But it easily gets a bit much with the different opinions and the online battles raging about one or the other subject.
Once my son was diagnosed, I found out pretty soon, that this is no different in the so called “autism community”. Don’t get me wrong! I think real debate is good.
But too often, people do not respect the basic rules of discussion, argument and reasoning. And it’s really just unproductive war mongering.

What people know about autism..

People are generally AWARE about autism, don’t you think?
They still have a lot to learn. Let’s do this.
